There's a word that always comes up when people talk about real flamenco: duende. And it's one of the hardest to translate from Spanish.
What the duende is
Duende is not a technique or an emotion: it's that moment when the singing, the dancing or the guitar go right through you and your skin prickles. Federico García Lorca — himself from Granada — devoted a whole lecture to it, Play and Theory of the Duende, defining it as a "mysterious power that everyone feels and no philosopher explains".
You don't look for it: it arrives. And when it does, the audience knows: that's why in a tablao you hear "¡ole!" at the exact right moment.
Where the word comes from
Duende came from "dueño de la casa" (master of the house), a household spirit from folklore. Flamenco borrowed the word to name the spirit that takes hold of the performer. It's a beautiful example of how a language recycles its words to name the untranslatable.
Where to feel it in Granada
Granada is one of the cradles of flamenco, especially that of the Sacromonte, the neighbourhood of Roma caves facing the Alhambra. There, in the zambras (flamenco parties in caves), flamenco is not a show for tourists: it's a living tradition.
- Look for the Sacromonte caves at dusk.
- Avoid anything that looks too packaged for coach tours: the good stuff is usually small.
- You don't need to understand the lyrics to feel the duende. But once you start catching the words, the emotion multiplies.
