Why Granada (and not another city)

There are cities where you study Spanish, and cities where Spanish studies you back. Granada is the second kind: compact (you cross it on foot in half an hour), a true university town (over 50,000 students and one of the largest Erasmus communities in Europe) and relentlessly conversational — tapas culture, squares and neighbourhood life make you speak from day one.

It is also one of Spain’s most affordable cultural capitals: rent, set lunch menus and transport cost clearly less than in Madrid or Barcelona, and the free tapa with your drink is still an institution.

And then there is the raw cultural material: the Alhambra and Generalife, the Albaicín and Sacromonte, Lorca and Falla, flamenco, al-Andalus and the thousands of Arabic loanwords Spanish carries inside. Here the language comes with a real stage set.

What to check before choosing a course

Four questions separate a good course from a room with chairs:

• Is culture part of the method (streets, museums, routes with tasks) or a Friday “extra”?
