It is official, and it is big news for the city: Granada is one of Spain's four finalist cities to become European Capital of Culture in 2031. And here is the best part: 2031 is also the year the University of Granada turns 500. If you are thinking of learning Spanish here, you are looking at the city at one of the finest moments of its recent history.
What is a "European Capital of Culture"?
Every year the European Union names one or more cities European Capital of Culture: for twelve months, that city becomes the continent's cultural showcase, with a huge programme of exhibitions, music, theatre and projects. In 2031 it is Spain's turn (together with Malta). Spain has held it before with Madrid (1992), Santiago (2000), Salamanca (2002) and San Sebastián (2016). Now the fifth is being chosen.
Where Granada stands right now
From nine initial candidates, the Ministry of Culture kept four finalists: Cáceres, Granada, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Oviedo. The winning city is announced in December 2026. Granada arrives backed by the regional government and local business, with a cultural programme reaching every neighbourhood in autumn 2026.
2031, a perfect year
Here is the lovely detail: the University of Granada was founded in 1531. In 2031 it turns half a millennium old. A university city celebrating 500 years of learning just as it bids to be Europe's cultural capital… is not a bad calling card for coming to study.
