Los Cahorros: Granada’s Sunday ritual

Ask any granadino what to do on a Sunday and the answer will include Los Cahorros: the Monachil river gorge, twenty minutes from the city, with its hanging bridges and a happy ending in a village bar. It’s THE initiation hike — and a Spanish lesson in motion.

Getting there (first lesson)

The intercity bus to Monachil leaves from Paseo del Salón. At the ticket window, practise the transport pill: «Un ida y vuelta a Monachil, por favor. ¿A qué hora sale el último de vuelta?» — that second question will save you a taxi.

The trail (second lesson)

From the village, follow the signs: it’s a circular route of about two hours, doable for anyone with decent footwear.

• The hanging bridges — the longest, 63 metres, sways just enough for the photo and the scream.
• The stretch of dripping walls, where the gorge narrows so much you must agacharte (duck) — you’ll learn that verb with your own body.
• The river pozas (pools), freezing even in August (the brave deny it; the water doesn’t lie).

The full mountain lexicon —sendero, desnivel, mochila, bota— lives in the weekend in the sierra pill, and the route comes with language missions if you carry the Clinic in your pocket.

What to bring (third lesson: imperatives)

Lleva water and a snack, ponte shoes with grip (river stones polish themselves), echa sunscreen even in winter and no cuentes on phone signal inside the gorge — download the map beforehand.

The ending that matters

Every Granada hike ends the same way: on a terrace in Monachil village, recounting the feat over a drink and its tapa. There goes your final mission: tell the route in the past tense — fuimos, cruzamos, nos agachamos, se me cayó el móvil al río (almost) — and close with the national Sunday-evening state: «estoy hecho polvo» (I’m wrecked).
