Studying Spanish in Spain: a semester or a year

More and more international students don't come to Spain for «just a week»: they come for a semester, an academic year or a gap year to learn Spanish properly. It's the best decision you can make with the language —and here's the guide to planning it.

How long does it take to jump a level?

As an honest reference (Common European Framework), moving from one level to the next —say B1 to B2— takes on the order of 150–200 hours of well-directed work. On an immersive stay, where you also live the language outside the classroom, that translates into:

• 📅 A semester (≈4–5 months): enough for a solid level jump and real ease on the street.
• 📅 An academic year (≈9 months): two jumps, and the point where Spanish stops being «a subject» and becomes yours.

The key isn't just the time, but that the time is directed: diagnosis, concrete areas to improve, follow-up. Without a plan, a year does the work of a month.

Semester vs. year: which do I pick?

• You arrive with little or no Spanish and want to genuinely function → a year.
• You already have a base (A2–B1) and want to consolidate and gain fluency → a semester may be enough.
• It's a gap year or a break between stages → the whole year is the complete experience: language + culture + life.

How to fit it around Erasmus or university

If you're already on Erasmus at the UGR or another faculty, Spanish needn't compete with your credits: the Clinic's platform works at any hour, and when the in-person programme opens it will concentrate its hours into a few days to keep the rest of the week free.
