You understand almost everything, but you freeze when you speak. It is the most common problem — and it has a fix. The key is not more apps: it is hours of real conversation with local speakers. Here is how to make them count.
It is the number-one complaint: "I understand quite a lot, but when I have to speak I freeze." You are not broken: speaking is a different skill from understanding, and it is only trained by speaking. No app or book will loosen your tongue. What actually works is hours of conversation with local speakers. Here is how.
Why local tutors are the key
A local tutor — a native speaker from the city — gives you three things no screen can match:
- Real Spanish, with the accent, rhythm and street expressions (in Granada, the delicious Andalusian on top).
- Correction in the moment, right where you slip, with the reason why.
- Good pressure: in front of a person you cannot "pause" or copy-paste. It forces you to produce — which is exactly what you need.
And something money cannot buy: a local tutor is also your door into the city. They take you to their bar, introduce you to their people, tell you what the guidebooks leave out.
How to actually make conversation count
Having someone to talk to is not enough; you have to talk well. Strategies that work:
- Speak even when you get it wrong. The mistake is not the enemy: it is the raw material. Whoever waits to speak "perfectly" never speaks.
- Master the workaround. If you do not know a word, describe it ("the thing you use to..."). That gymnastic is pure gold and saves you in real life.
- Steal and reuse. When your tutor says an expression you like, write it down and use it within 24 hours. That is how it sticks.
- Ask to be corrected on what matters, not every accent mark. Say: "correct what stops me being understood." Fluency first, perfection later.
- Record yourself now and then. Hearing yourself is uncomfortable and hugely useful: you catch your filler words and fossilised errors.
- Bring your own topics. Arrive with three things you want to tell. A conversation with direction is worth ten times a "how are you?".
The most common mistake: hoarding "input" and never producing
Many people pile up series, podcasts and flashcards... and still cannot speak. Input (listening, reading) is necessary, but not enough: fluency comes from output (speaking, writing). If you spend ten hours listening and zero speaking, guess which skill does not improve. Rebalance: for every stretch of listening, a stretch of talking.
Granada, the city to loosen up in
Here conversation is everywhere. Tapas are a perpetual excuse to chat at the bar; the squares invite you to linger; people have time and wit. Every beer, every "does this have...?", every chat with the person next to you is a micro-lesson. It is what we at the Clinic call Granada as medicine: the whole city as a conversation classroom.
How we work on it at the Clinic
Our method is built so that you produce language from day one, not so you collect notes: conversation missions across the city, practice with local speakers, and a language "doctor" to rehearse with, fear-free. And everything you say and write leaves a trace and gets corrected. Start with your level test to find your starting point, read why study Spanish in Granada and claim your free month.
Nobody learned to swim by reading about swimming. Spanish is the same: you loosen up by speaking, with real people, in a city that gives you conversation. Granada is that city.
