The sinalefa — linking the final vowel of one word with the first of the next («va‿a‿hablar») — forces you to connect words the way natives do; enjambment, when the sentence spills from one line into the next, trains your breathing and intonation; the beat of the verse plants the rhythm of Spanish in your ear, and rhyme sharpens the precision of your vowels. And the figures — metaphor, anaphora, alliteration — multiply your ability to produce language of your own. That is why those who recite, pronounce and speak better.
